Description
Here is one of a series of 3 treatments of this very friendly and social limpkin who posed for us for nearly 30 minutes while we took hundreds of photos. The Limpkin (Aramus guarauna) has an ideal bill for finding the snails, mussels, frogs, insect, and crustaceans that it dines on in the marshes it inhabits. In the US it is limited to Florida (it is declining in Florida due to decline in its main food source, the Florida Apple Snail, and is considered a species of special concern), and it is found throughout the Caribbean islands as well. It is monogamous and is similar to the Yellow-crowned and Black-crowned Night-Herons.
