Artist's Description
Formerly known as the Louisiana Heron, it breeds in sub-tropical swamps throughout the Gulf states of the US, northern Mexico, Central America, Caribbean, down to Brazil and Peru. Adults have blue-grey heads, neck, back and upper wings. The breeding plumage shows long blue filamentous plumes on head and neck, buff ones on the back. It is the only dark-colored heron with a white belly. This colorful heron is one of my favorites.
